Exploring Canberra

Canberra may be small, but there are many things to do and places to see. At the centre of the city, you will find Lake Burley Griffin, a manmade lake that serves as the city’s centrepiece. Here you can relax by the lake, have a barbecue with your friends and family, and even take a dip.

Many buildings of great importance surround the lake. Including one of the city’s most popular locations, the Parliament House. A tour of the Parliament House allows visitors to view the many art pieces inside. These works of art hold significance to Australia and give tourists the opportunity to learn about the country.

To get a fantastic view of this lively city, make your way to Telstra Tower. This iconic landmark is a telecommunication tower with a height of over 195 metres. From the viewing deck, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree view of Canberra and surrounding areas.

The Australian War Memorial is another popular and important site in Canberra. It doubles as a memorial for Australian soldiers and a museum honouring Australia’s troops. Just a short distance from the Australian War Memorial, you will find Anzac Parade, a significant road used for ceremonial occasions and military memorials.

Get to Know Australia’s History, Arts, and Culture

The Australian Capital Territory has a number of museums and galleries to explore. One of these is the National Museum of Australia. The facade alone is enough to warrant a visit to this museum. The museum houses hundreds of thousands of objects, each one a part of the tapestry that makes Australia what it is.

Art aficionados will love the National Gallery of Australia. The gallery houses Aboriginal art as well as Pacific art from Melanesia and Polynesia. You will also find other kinds of art here such as sculptures and photographs along with art pieces from other parts of the world.

Experience Shopping and Dining in ACT

Canberra is also a great place for shopping and dining. Near the centre of Canberra is Braddon, a hip location with an assortment of boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and bars. A particularly notable spot in Braddon is Lonsdale Street which plays host to pop-up shops and unique small businesses.

You can also drop by Kingston and Manuka to survey some good eats. You will find many hip cafes serving food and drinks that are as delicious as they look. Kingston and Manuka are also known for their nightlife and unique bars.

Exciting Events in the Australian Capital Territory

The Canberra Balloon Spectacular, formerly known as Canberra Balloon Festival, is an annual event in Canberra. Over two weeks every March, hot air balloons launch from the Old Parliament House at dawn and fly over the city. The festival often features imaginative and unique hot air balloons. It’s clear to see how the festival got “spectacular” in its name.

Floriade in Canberra is a month-long festival that happens yearly. From mid-September to mid-October, visitors head to Commonwealth Park for this event. One of the main highlights of Floriade is a massive display of tulips. The festival also showcases art and live musical performances.
